The Examining Judge will get a more supervisory/monitoring role in criminal investigations, which will strengthen his position. In conjunction with the Council for the Judiciary, Minister Opstelten of Security and Justice is currently working on the details/a framework to strengthen the position of the Examining Judge in fact and in quality. This is evident from the legislative proposal from Minister Opstelten, which was adopted by the Senate today.

Today, the Upper House agreed to the use of DNA relationship tests in the fight against crime. This involves a new type of DNA test by which it can be ascertained whether a relative of the person whose DNA has been tested by the police and the Public Prosecution Service, is a potential offender of a crime. The application of relationship tests is urgently needed in the field.
